Sir Enclosed you have a Check for One Thousand Dollars in full for the two five hundred Dollars drafts left with me— imperious circumstances has prevented my making more early payment — We all remain well at present, I am Sir Your most Ob^dt Serv^t Samuel Hodgdon M^r John Clifford Phila^a 28^th Sept^r 1798 — Sir By order of the Secretary of War I send to your address the articles of Clothing inserted in the enclosed list or Invoice to answer as patterns for the part of the Clothing expected to be contracted for at Baltimore under your directions — It is proper to mention, that having no Privates Vests, Shirts or Woolen Overalls in Store, I have been obliged to send those received under former contracts for Serjeants — these parts of Clothing have usually cost 15ty per Cent more than those of the same kinds furnished for Privates — but as I have selected the most ordinary that have passed inspection no great difference will be expected — I will thank you to acknowledge the receipt of them and let me know when you receive them — With Sentiments of esteem I am your most Ob^at Serv^t Samuel Hodgdon John Swan Esq^r
