West Point Sept^r. 12. 1779 Sir Your letters of the 9. 11 & 13 instant I have received. Concerning your last letter I referred to the duplicate receipt roll, which I now inclose, for the ordnance attachments July, pag. I found James Clement had signed it. I find him at this time, I paid the rest of them, of them they went to M^r [undecipherable: probable reading Sprigg]'s desk & signed their receipts, which he witnessed. I examined the copying out of the pay and the writing up of it, but did not observe he had not signed the pay roll I forwarded to you. I will thank you to forward to me the July pay roll I sent you, if the entry made in your books will permit. Otherwise, on your returning me the inclosed pay roll I will send to you Barret's separate receipt for the four dollars. I inclose you the ordnance attachments receipt roll for its August pay, amount ninety dollars. On my return from New York the 13 ultimo I had to make out a draught by order of the Secretary of War, of a half medium twelve pounder to send to [undecipherable] & Bureau of Boston, who was waiting with impatience for it to cast more half cannon for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, which draught is about three feet long, lying on a small scale, and finished in an artillery manner. I had also immediately to collecting evidences and attend the Supreme Court [undecipherable] at Goshen, having had a writ served. About two or three years since [undecipherable] as a [undecipherable] at that time a [undecipherable] he lived about three miles from this garrison for eight hours, (which was the time I had him on [undecipherable] the guard house,) and [undecipherable] of battery, as he alledged. He is a great rascal [undecipherable] goes [undecipherable] about four years since for the security of the Public property, if to save many lives being lost, as he had a great many co-operators and villains as himself, who live in the mountains adjoining this garrison. At that time I had, left with me by [undecipherable] when he was ordered to the [undecipherable], about forty of the very worst of all the, (I think "two dollars,") servants he had inlisted while recruiting here; two of whom were then in the guard house in irons, for mutiny, of the rest, eight one or two, were in a very mutinous state and ready & willing to join [undecipherable: probable reading Fauret] & his co-operators for the sake of plundering the arsenal &c. in case I attempted to put him out by force. [undecipherable: probable reading Fauret] had come into the garrison in defiance of a garrison order, if you see it requisite to give him, for the security of the [undecipherable] property, a few days before I confined him, and was determined to oppose by force my putting him out. I then had only the ordnance detachment consisting of about fifteen men, whom I could depend upon. On my confining [undecipherable: probable reading Fauret], which was in the evening about dusk, I served out ammunition to said detachment, and gave orders for them to load their muskets. In very short time after about [undecipherable] or fifteen of [undecipherable: probable reading Fauret]'s co-operators, with clubs [undecipherable] in their hands, advanced up to the guard house, to swear he would release him. On the Sergeant of the guard informing them of the tenor of his orders, and ordering his men to cock their pieces, the banditti thought it best to quit the garrison. I was frequently troubled by him before, but have not been since. All the very two or three miles in the road to Goshen [undecipherable] Poles, which they call Liberty Poles, the jury brought in, "No cause of action." On my return from Goshen, at [undecipherable] place I was a week attending court, I had to calculate & contract hand shells of different sizes, & some of them for pieces of ordnance of uncommon sizes, for Col. [undecipherable: probable reading Stirnes] of New York, to have shells cast at Queensborough furnace, which was then in [undecipherable] of an immediate want [undecipherable] the construction of such shells. In addition to what I have above mentioned, I had to transact, within the time, two more department business, which the interest of the Public would not permit being deferred, and to endeavour to form a contract for rebuilding a part of the store wall of the powder magazine in old Fort Clinton. What I have been relating concerning the employment of my time took me, without a moment's [undecipherable], from the day I arrived from [undecipherable: probable reading Reding] New York to the 3 of September, which was the day I last wrote to you — and I think you will coincide with me in opinion it was business I ought to have considered of the first moment.
