Sept 1798 / Major [undecipherable] / [undecipherable] Oct. 1. 1798 / answered —] Augusta, 14^th September 1798 Dear Sir I wrote you from Savannah, on the 22^d of last month, that I should come to that place for the purpose of placing in Col. Pope's hands the pay for Randolph & Fansela's troops, and to pay to Col. Fansela the amount of his [undecipherable] for [undecipherable] furnished by him to the militia of his [undecipherable]. I arrived here on the [undecipherable] — unfortunately Col. Pope had been [undecipherable] off and Col. Fansela was in the appointment of the State inspecting the militia — they could not, therefore meet me agreeably to appointment; in consequence of that I have been obliged to make a journey into Wilkes county, where I have [undecipherable] for payment of the militia and [undecipherable] in his hands. Col. Fansela was [undecipherable] expected to meet me, but was suddenly taken [undecipherable]. I would have been very much out of funds [undecipherable] to have [undecipherable] to his house. I shall, therefore, take the money with me to Savannah, and leave it with M^r. Habersham, unless Col. Fansela should come to town this evening. I now enclose you vouchers for the payments I have made, which I request you to pass to my credit — to wit: For Fansela's troop from the 1^st Nov. 1794 to the 31^st December 1795. ———————————— For the same from the 1^st [undecipherable] to the 29^th February 1796 ——— 3.280.66.
