I am extremely sorry to hear of the depopulation of Philadelphia, but happy to hear that the Secretary of War is mending in his situation of health. I have given a draft on the Secretary for 400 Dols - perhaps he may think it strange. I beg of you not to let the draft be protested, The nature of public business requires punctuality, and the scarcity of money here is such that we cannot keep up public credit without punctuality. I am now nearly the completion of the examination of my stores & really have to pay my laborers every day. I am anxiously engaged in procuring all the last Maryland stores that I can all of which requires money - let my bill be paid, I shall forward you a satisfactory account at the close of this month. The stores ordered to Winchester will go on Tuesday next With much respect Your Obt Servant E. Langham Major Hodgdon
