Philadelphia 19^th September 1798 Sir, By a letter received this morning from the Secretary of the Treasury, I am informed there remains on the hands of Gen^l Nevel the sum of Dol 2994. [undecipherable] which he received for the sale of Lands belonging to the U S and which the Secretary wishes to draw into the Treasury. He requests me to take measures for preventing any more Bills from being drawn on for the Q. M. Department from Pittsburg until this sum is received and applied. General Nevel will be informed by the Secretary of the Treasury that he is to receive bills drawn by authorized Agents of the Quarter Masters Department to the extent of the sum above mentioned, and I am requested to inform him what bills and to what extent he may receive. In pursuance of this plan I shall write to General Nevel to receive your drafts for the sum in question & forward them to the Treasury as they are received & paid, that they may be carried to the debit of the Department. This will supercede the necessity of your drawing here or elsewhere until the fund thus provided is exhausted. You will keep me informed, of all Bills drawn in consequence of this arrangement.
