Pittsburg, 24. August 1798 Sir, Your letter of the 17.^th instant is this moment come to hand. I am extremely concerned for your City laboring under the present return of that dreadful Scourge; but it is in some degree satisfactory to learn that its virulence is not equal to that of the former visitations. I hope however that notwithstanding you have hitherto escaped in the midst of danger you will not now suppose yourself and family invulnerable. Since last post I have found it necessary to make the following drafts on you in order to enable me to discharge the several claims against the department, viz. On the 20^th [undecipherable] in favor of David Davis at ten days for three hundred dollars. On the 24^th in favor of Isaac Gregg for six hundred fifty dollars in two bills viz: one of 500 the other of 150. Dollars at 8 days sight and also in favor of James Hogg at fifteen days sight for five hundred dollars. These several drafts be pleased to pay & charge as usual. I feel very uneasy under the claim that [undecipherable] Forrest has against me for Monies paid into the Treasury for me on account of Mungo Bottom Tract of Land. I had appropriated the balance due me for services in the Commissary Department to be applied that way. I sincerely wish that you would take the trouble of settling that business for me — Paying interest for money ought to be avoided when it is possible & this I presume is a possible case.
