Fayetteville [Mail] — and readily [undecipherable] by Government to allow himself to be [undecipherable] [undecipherable] at the approaching [Session?] of the [Legislature?] many of us in this quarter think he can [serve?] [undecipherable] more effectually in times like the present, by remaining in the [Service?] of the State, than by accepting [an] Appointment in the Provisional Army, which [would?] [undecipherable] qualify him [for?] State [honors?], without bringing him into immediate active [service?] in the Field, as I presume the Provisional Army may not be [called on]— The General however [assures?] me he — active [service?] and [undecipherable] I have no hesitation in saying that [undecipherable] [when?] [the?] come he will be found an Excellent [officer?] and that he will be ready at all times to [serve?] his Country in such a manner as is most likely to [conduce?] to the public interest— I am induced to say so much on this subject in consequence of the [conversation?] I had the pleasure to have with you before I left Phila[delphia] on this Business, and to hope no disgust may be excited by the Generals declining to accept at this time the Appoint in the Prov[isiona]l E. Army I must here beg leave to add that his [great?] Personal Knowledge of Men & Characters in this State I can with propriety assure you If any Officers are wanting in this quarter, his recommendation may be [safely?] and relied on. and if Applied to be well [fine?] way to recover from his [undecipherable] [undecipherable] he hopes to be again fit for [service?] [this?] climate. I enclose you a letter from Capt Adam of [this?] place who is now at Wilmington and refer [you?] to it for information of the Situation of the Arms deposited at Wilmington; you may rely on his Statement, indeed he nothing more than I had [given?] before, I had given you a hint of— I [hope?] and trust you have ordered some of those Arms [to?] this place as you once promised should be done If they are Committed to the Care of Capt. Adam and Winslow, you may rest [assured? &?] [trust?]— Can [undecipherable] [undecipherable] from the [ground?] and can only be entered only by one flight of Steps— I can not omit [again intreating you] to loan [or?] [borrow?] Companies in this Neighborhood some of the Muskets [until?] they can be [procured?] from some other quarter— We have a few Companies of Infantry in this [District?] in handsome uniform who Want nothing but Arms to make them a Terror to the enemies of the Peace [&?] lovers of their Country— [as?] far as their numbers can produce that feeling, but thank God in this part of the [State?] We have few [Jacobins?], and Still fewer Jacobins[undecipherable] [undecipherable] and [undecipherable] [undecipherable] to help a [undecipherable] that are very numerous [between?] & Wilmington, both of which [promise?] [to?] be immediately aided from this [District?] case of any disturbance of a Serious nature If you could possibly Spare Swords & [Pistols?] to 100 Horsemen and send them here, [some?] [few?] days raise that number of Young Men [to?] [employ?] themselves as Dragoons & to offer [them?] to the U. States as Volunteers— the [Arms?] [would?] be as safe as if they were in one [undecipherable], & might be of infinite [service?] in [every?] respect [of?] [but?] for [horses?] &c, but the difficulty of obtaining them is [too?] great—. [therefore?] If they could be obtained from the U. States for 12 months, it is to be hoped in that time Contracts may be made for furnishing, ourselves, on our own accounts. It seems the Wilmington Company is fur- nished with arms from the public Stores, and I am glad of it, for the Situation of that place is not the most Safe [Appearance?] from Various reasons, and it must give Satisfaction and Security to the Inhabitants to see arms in the Hands of those Who are interested in preserving the Safety of the town & its Vicinity. Our [undecipherable] have for Congress are closed & the I have been disappointed at a [change?] of the [Representative?] from this [District?] of [Hillsboro?], the Changes in the other parts [of?] [the?] State are greater than I expected— and in some [places?] & often there is a complete [Change?] to [undecipherable] District— M^r [Mole?] in place of [undecipherable] [undecipherable] R. Macon Hillsboro — [do?] [Do?] [Sanford?] [undecipherable] Grove— Fayett[e]ville there is no kind of doubt had [Stanf?] to [appear?] here more unequivocal [Personal?] Character he would have Elected— there are Several [Frenchmen?] in [the?] portion who could have been returned to [to?] our [undecipherable], but they would not offer and some [undecipherable] [undecipherable] [obligations?] [undecipherable] [Stanf?] would [Co?] [by?] Wells— We are all [hourly?] deploring the wretched State of [Ireland?] often times are Approaching that distract & distracted Country— This is a new and awful [lesson?] to the Governments & People of the World— I [trust?] [that?] We in this Country may never experience, what [occasions?] for such [doleful?] Scenes.
