Fort Wolcott 16.th Aug.t 1798.
Sir
Enclosed you will receive Duplicate receipts for Bounty paid Two recruits who enlisted with me on the 27.th of June at New York — They have been Mustered for the Month of July and on the 10.th of August I paid them the whole of their Bounty —
A Certificate from Doc.t Tilling=hast, as well as the Discharge of Edw. Kendall are also enclosed — Since the 1.st Instant I have enlisted five others and immediately after the next Muster shall forward the Necessary Vouchers — I received yours of the 4.th Ins.t and also the money from John S. Dexter Esq.r
The reason why the Discharges of William Cornwalt, Sylvanus Pratt, & Isaac Beadle did not accompany their enlistments was the want of a Field Officer present at the time their three years service expired — And no Junior Officer can give a Discharge.
I will not Knowingly deviate from the Recruiting instructions, but suppose from Cap.t [undecipherable] written instructions dated 20.th July 1797. on the Recruits joining this Garrison and being Mustered that I am authorised to pay them the whole of their Bounty.
I will forward my account Monthly and as I have no public money, should wish to be reimbursed in the sum advanced —
with respect
I am Sir
your most Humble Serv.t
W. Littlefield
