General Craig — [undecipherable] — a.D. 96] Pittsburg 3^d August 1798 Sir, Your letter of the 27^th ultimo accompanied by Receipts of Monies paid the families of the Ship Carpenters &ca together with accounts of Articles purchased for the General Quarter Master General for T Bates the two former of which I have an opportunity of sending forward this Day. In pursuance of an Order of the Secretary of War I have on the first of this Month dismissed and paid off all the Ship Carpenters that came from Philadelphia except Mr. Owner the Superintendent and five others viz. Jacob Death, William Turner, Duncan Campbell, Henry Miller and John Lofbay who are necessarily detained to assist in completing & launching the Galley) and which cannot be performed until a considerable rise of the Water of the Alleghany takes place. You will find enclosed a statement of the Stopages made at Settlement with the Carpenters and which are placed to your credit. In order to enable me to discharge the several claims against the Department I have taken up from General John Neville two thousand dollars and have this day drawn on you in his favor for that sum at ten days sight which be pleased to pay and charge as usual. Enclosed you will find a copy of a relinquishment made in favour of the families of four of the Ship-Carpenters that are sent to Detroit. I am, Sir, Your Most Obedient Humble Servant Isaac Craig N.B.
