Samuel Hodgdon Philadelphia] [Received No. [undecipherable] No. 401310.] [374] [undecipherable endorsement] Lewistown 31^st July 1798 Dear Sir M^r John Johnston a young Man of this Place & a Native of America having a strong Predilection for a military life has applied for an Appointment in the Army. I have addressed a letter to the Secretary at War on the Subject but supposing Applications of this Kind to be very numerous & that therefore those from this remote Part of the Country may be overlooked I have taken the liberty of requesting you if not inconsistent with your other Engagements to mention M^r Johnston's Name — He has applied for a Company but I presume he would accept a Lieutenancy & by the Information I have had respecting him I think he would not dishonour that Appointment— There is also a certain John Milroy a Native of this Place who is an Applicant for a Subaltern's Appointment & who I believe is a very meritorious Young Man— His natural Diffidence will prevent his appearing to Advantage but but his Character & that of his Family is very fair in this Country With Great Respect I am Yours truly Andrew Gregg Col: Hodgdon
