[Savanna 31 July 1798 Constant Freeman rec'd 22^d August ans?] Savannah 31^st July 1798 Sir, Inclosed is a duplicate of my letter to you of the 22^d instant and a copy of the same forwarded. I transmitted to you in a letter [undecipherable] mailed from this port on the [5]^th— I have been most anxiously [undecipherable: probable reading expecting] letters from you, in answer to mine of the 8^th 22^d & 26^th of last month — a duplicate of the mine Sent by the sloop John Cap^t. Morgan, agreeably to your desire in your letter of [undecipherable] — in order that you might know that I had not all the rolls mentioned in the estimate for militia, Service — the two last letters were Sent by the schooner Charlotte, viia New york — I am extremely Sorry that [undecipherable] received copies of Fauche & Randolph's payments while Colonel Pope was here, it would have Saved me the trouble of a journey to [undecipherable] — a few lines from you would have relieved my mind from the greatest anxiety. Ensign McCall and myself [undecipherable] the militia [undecipherable] to the [undecipherable] of April — I have Sent to the different ports in [undecipherable] to the 30^th of June. I shall be able with the [undecipherable] [undecipherable] has received and [undecipherable] balanced [undecipherable]. [undecipherable] arrived to discharge [undecipherable] — I am now engaged in making an examination [undecipherable] McCall [undecipherable] Sound and complete which will be transmitted [undecipherable] Dispatches. Subsequent to mine letter to M^r. [undecipherable] of the 22^d instant the [undecipherable] intention is [undecipherable] of the [undecipherable] [undecipherable] solicited on [undecipherable] [undecipherable] for the favours you mention the militia, for which [undecipherable] I have [undecipherable] to the regular time [undecipherable]. I have got — M^r. Freeman's Letter 24 July 1798] [Duplicate] Savannah 24^th July 1798 Sir, I have written three letters to you since I returned in this place — on the 8^th 22^nd and 26^th of last month — I informed you that I had not all the rolls mentioned in the estimate you transmitted. I have Therefore been [undecipherable] [undecipherable] I Should receive certified copies from your office, but they have not come to hand — I suppose from the failure of the post — We have now four mails due — Col. Pope came to town on the 6^th Instant, and he has received from me the amount of the enclosed vouchers which I request you will pass to my credit — You will be pleased to charge me with the Sum of three thousand five hundred and thirty five Dollars and fifty Cents which I have received from him for deductions made from the pay of the [undecipherable] for rations of provision and forage which have been found to him by the United States — If I had Cap^t. Fauche and Randolph's rolls, I would complete the payments of the estimate — Lieut. William L. Stuart was paid by me in May 1796 — for which I have already received credit in the Settlement of my accounts — Lieu^ts. Lippington and McGillis were paid by M^r. Habersham on the 22^nd of March 1797- for which he has transmitted vouchers — I expect I shall receive Lieut. Harris' rolls soon — I shall have money remaining in my hands arising from the payments already made and now Stopped to discharge this one — Col. Pope waited in Town untill this morning in hopes that the rolls would arrive — as soon as they come to hand I shall go to Augusta — There he will meet me — I could not detain him any longer as his private business requires his attention — While he was here, I examined all his vouchers from his first Entering into the office of paymaster untill the present payment of which I have made a Statement.
