Philad^r 30^th July 1798 Sir I have no other way to get the articles inserted in the enclosed Invoices to hand but through you— I shall be greatly obliged by your attention to them so that they may speedily reach their destinations— they are for Recruiting Parties and of course urgent, as nothing can be attempted in that way until the Clothing arrives— I have an expectation of being in New York myself the last of this week or the beginning of next. Lieutenant Leonard Philadelphia 30^th July 1798 Sir By order of the Secretary of War, I have put on board the Schooner Jenny Bridges, to the address of Melanctor Smith, Merchant in New York, fifty Suits of Cloathing with a suitable number of Arms and Accoutrements for the Recruits you may raise at New London in Connecticut. M^r Smith will forward them to you immediately— Should find no opportunity to ship them directly from hence, the mode adopted will I hope and expects save time— The Vessel will sail this evening [in the Morning] and you may calculate accordingly— This goes by post as advice— I am— Sir Your Most Obedient Servant Samuel Hodgdon— Cap^t Decius Wadsworth New London Connecticut Philadelphia 30^th July 1798 Sir By order of the Secretary of War I have this day shipped to your address, via New York, 25 Suits of Cloathing with a proportionable number of Arms & Accoutrements to enable you to commence your Recruiting. I have desired Melanctor Smith the Merchant to whom they are addressed in York to use his best endeavours to get them on to you immediately. I hope he will succeed and that you will shortly receive them. The Vessel sails for York this evening. I conclude M^r Smith will send the supplies to Hartford with orders to send them up the River with all convenient dispatch. It will be well for you to interest some friend in Hartford to advise you of their arrival, and assist in getting them on as you may direct.
