War Department 28^th July 1798 Sir, I have received your letter of the 20^th inst in which you recommend Mr Huntington for a commission in the additional regiments to be raised for the army of the United States. As from the nature of appointments, it is impossible to anticipate the re- sult of any application, you will perceive that it is not in my power to promise military promotion. But, I assure you, that Mr Huntington's application shall receive from me, all that attention which his character seems to merit, and is in my power to bestow.
