[John Habersham Savannah July 17^th 1798 rec^d & Ans^d] Sir, Custom House, Savannah, July 17, 1798. I have to acknowledge the receipt of your letter dated the 21^st ultimo, notifying me that the Treasurer would remit me the sum of three thousand seven hundred dollars. This amount I received from the Treasurer by the same Post, and it will be applied to the payment of the Troops for the months of March and April last. With respect to the errors in transmitting the vouchers for the pay of the Troops, my letter of the 8^th ult^o will have explained how they arose in some degree. I am much obliged to you for pointing out what you conceived and certainly must have appeared to you a considerable omission to my prejudice, in not having included in the Memorandum of payments the amount of sundry rolls for the pay of Ensigns Allison and Thompson's deductions from the 1^st of November 1796 to the 31^st of April 1797. The fact, however, is that I remitted M^r McCall the amount of those rolls on the 9^th of October, 1797, and charged the same to Major Freeman; as will appear when my Account Current with him is transmitted to your Office. You will observe that M^r McCall has given credit for the said amount, as received of me, in the Account Current he lately forwarded to you. Major Freeman has been here some time, and informs me that he momentarily expects M^r McCall from Gen^l Wilkinson; when he arrives the necessary explanations will take place.
