Last Return of the Quartermaster Stores
Document 1798The return Mr. McClallen left at Fort Niagara is incomplete and has no signature. This being the case, Coffin is unable to compile an accurate return based on the documents in his possession. Therefore, Major Rivardi wants Hodgdon to forward a certified copy of the last return of the Quartermaster's stores which McClallen sent from Niagara.
Samuel Hodgson, Esquire Philadelphia [upside down] John Gorham Coffin 11th July 1798 Rec’d 27 — Fort Niagara, 11 July 1798 Sir, I am requested by Major Ricardo to advise you to forward to this place a certified copy of the last Return of Quarter Master’s Stores & which Mr. McClellan sent you from this Fort. The return he left here is without Signature and is also incomplete—it follows that it is not in my power to make an accurate Return from the documents in my possession, for I expect to leave this place soon. I hope you will think proper to comply with my request by the next post, as I am desirous of leaving the business of the Quarter Master in a regular manner.
