Niagara July 10^th 1798 Sir, I take this Opportunity for transmitting to your Office the Pay & Muster Rolls of this Garrison for the Month of June — Captain Bruff's declining having any thing further to do with the payment of the troops unless he receives the compensation allowed to Pay Masters gives me some Uneasiness as there is no other officer here who could undertake a task which except in absolute Necessity I Should decline to perform. If the report is true that M^r Visher is to be Station'd here, he would be a very proper person & as such I beg leave to recomend him — My debt of Eight Hundred & fifty two [undecipherable] Dollars will by the middle of [strikethrough: this] Month be ballanced in consequence of the Stoppages made on my Pay & Forage Since the first day of July 1797 — Stoppages which being continued to the end of August will leave in my favor a Surplus of 57. D^ol 77. — Should the Secretary of War grant the advance which I requested I Shall leave out my Name from the Pay Rolls until it is cancelled — Major Buell & M^r Forsyth have both orders for the Amount of my Subsistence due — I hope you will have the goodness to honor them — I Should take it as a particular favor if (as I understand Colonel O'Hara is in Philadelphia) you could obtain a Settlement of the due bill left in your hands by M^r M^c Hallen — Should the business not be practicable it will be a loss which would be greatly felt — With the greatest regard, I have the honor to be Sir your Most Obedient & Very Humble Servant C.
