Sir) I sometime since forwarded an application to you for an appointment as Surgeon Mate in the Navy, when the Secretary always answer this City, he suggested to Captain Yellot, that probable their would not be a Surgeon & mate to such Sloops of war, if that be the Case, that their is no matter to be appointed you will please to Confide me as an applicant for an appointment as Surgeon and if upon a Retrospective view you should [strikethrough: attend] find that my application is deserving an appointment as Surgeon, you will appoint me, and if not, you will still Consider me as an applicant for Mates Commission, with due Respects I Remain Being Indebted to you most Humbly
