I received your letter dated the 13th Inst. & one from from McNelis dated 6 same month — the first enclosing sundry abstracts of payments to the Militia and regular Troops in Tennessee. The latter enclosing a Pay roll of Capt William Prestons Company for examination, as to the periods to which they received pay from this Office, —
It may be proper to observe as to the latter that Capt William Preston has considerable unsettled accounts, and public monies to account for, his pay will therefore be deducted untill these are closed, which I conceive the only effectual means of bringing an Officer to a settlement who has been so repeatedly called upon as Capt Preston has. he is furnished with a list of objections which are [undecipherable] the examination of his accounts in this Office, and I trust by this means he will speedily remove them. Capt Prestons Company was paid up to the 1 February 1797 as Stated in the Roll, those men who joined from Capt Gibson subsequent to the settlement of his recruiting account at this Office, I cannot check, their
