Fort Oswego June 25. 1798
Sir,
I wrote to you on the 1 Inst. and enclosed my Vouchers to with an Acct Current since which I have received your two letters of 31 of May Ult: and the 4th Inst. in the former you mention that the sum of 1082 [undecipherable] Dollars has been transmitted to me by Mr Samuel Lewis [undecipherable] amount of pay due to the Detachment under my command up to the 1st of May 1798 this letter [was] forwarded to me some time since, and as I [undecipherable] the money had reached Rotterdam, and was there waiting for a safe conveyance I delayed answering you till I could hear from there whither this was the case. I must therefore inform you that I have this moment seen a Gentleman (Mr R[undecipherable] of the house of Meyer &Co.) from that Quarter, who informs me that no such letter has arrived at the Post Office. Your last letter mentioning the same to wit, that the money had been forwarded by Mr J Lewis makes me very apprehensive that some evil has befallen it, unless however that you have directed it to the care of some person of whom I have no information, we then such a person could hardly be so void of [undecipherable] as not to inform me knowing that I had received advice of its being forwarded.
I shall forward my subsequent pay & Muster Rolls on the 8th of next month, which will be in a few days.
I am Sir,
Yr very Obt Serv
