A doubt having arisen with me whether an Officer doing the duty of Adjutant & Pay master to a Battalion in the Corps of Artillerists & Engineers, as provided for in the act of the 10 May 1794, organizing that Corps, is entitled to the pay & forage allowed by previous acts to an Officer in addition to his pay in the line for doing such duty to a regiment — I have therefore to request that you will be pleased to cause a decision by the Attorney General, to that effect in order to guide me in my Settlements —

The Treasurer of the United States will remit you the sum of seven hundred & forty one dollars & 100/100 which you will be pleased to pay to Lieutt Nehemiah Freeman Temporary Paymaster of the Corps of Artillerists & Engineers at West Point taking the necessary receipts holding him accountable, being for pay & forage of the commissioned Officers, the pay of the non commissioned Officers & Privates of the said Garrison for the month of May 1798 and for the balance of bounty due Jeremiah Bright a recruit of Lt H.
