Philadelphia 2^d June 1798 Sir— Captain L Homeodieu has called on me again about the freight of the Guns, I shewed him your letter mentioning the probability of an abattement on the charge— He was pretty crusty in the business, tho' it is evident the complaint is on our side; the result was, I told him I would not settle with him for the freight but refer it to you to settle with his Owner in New York— this I wish you to do on the best terms you can— I have this day received a Bill of Lading of 8 Brass 6 Pounders, and the same number of three pounders with their traveling Carriages shipped at Newport to my address in this City at 7 Dollars a ton— estimating the Carriages with the Guns I wish you to mention this circumstance to L Homeotieus Owner before you settle with him— I am Sir Your Most Obedient Servant Samuel Hodgdon— Melandon Smith— Philadelphia 27 June 1798. Sir, You will please to compleat the two twelve pounders Carriages for the Brass Pieces as expeditiously as possible, and when finished send them to New York to the address of Colonel Stevens— By your Return you have on hand thirty three thirteen Inch Shells if fit for use as I presume is the case send them with two hundred thirteen inch fuzes, and eight hundred twelve pound shot at the same time and to the same address— More shells are wanted, which must be supplied from some other Part, if I can find any of that size on hand, a matter I a little doubt— I am Sir Your Most Obedient Servant Samuel Hodgdon.
