Sir
There will be several Gun carriages wanted for the Guns [undecipherable] the defences, to the [undecipherable] and harbour of [undecipherable] lands, which it may be necessary to have made as soon as possible. I have therefore to request that you will contract for as many carriages as there are Guns at present in the works, with [the] carriages, and also carriages for two [undecipherable] such Guns as [undecipherable] ordered from Providence. You will [undecipherable] and take the orders of Captain [undecipherable] as to the [undecipherable] of carriages, and provide in your contract, [a] well seasoned wood, and that the iron [undecipherable] be sufficiently strong.
Captain [undecipherable] has also been directed to make an immediate survey of Tammany hill, and report what additional works thereon may be indispensable to the defense of the Town. That as little time as possible may be lost in commencing them, I beg you will aid him in the survey, and that you will point out to him any Gentleman whose assistance and opinion may be of service.
Perhaps it may be proper to add that you will be allowed one per Cent on the money which will pass through your hands for the discharge of any contracts you may enter into, or expenditures on any works that may be undertaken, and which you only be appointed to make the disbursements for.
