War Office 15^th June 1798 Sir. Last night two letters came to hand from Gen^l Wilkinson - and some returns from Western Posts &c all have been submitted to Col. Pickering, and answers lay over, by his orders for your return. This can be, [strikethrough: it] it's supposed without injury to the service - The General sailed down the river on the 9^th or 10^th instant - One of his letters speaks of the murder of an Indian by a boy of the name of Carpenter, who was pursued by the deceased, with a knife and club - The Indian was named White Eyes (the younger of that name.) He reminds the presence with his regiment of Lieutenant Hyde - to whom I have written - informing of the General's requisition, and to enable me to state if he has any, the reasons for desiring a longer absence - We have here no news, at least made public - nothing from [undecipherable] - I inclose two letters from M^r McHenry and one of the Children - M^r Goddard I believe has not yet qualified and I suppose will not, before your return, which he expects will give him a full[?] from what has been, of what probably will be, to be done - In haste respectfully, [undecipherable: probable reading "Secy"] of War - John Caldwell [Docket on reverse: 15 June 1798 / John Caldwell]
