Philadelphia 8^th June 1798. Sir Two long nine pounders are to be sold by Auction on Monday next at 3 Oclock at Point Pleasant Harrington. Is any person employed to purchase them for the Public? or is it not necessary? I am Sir Your most Obedt Servt Samuel Hodgdon James McHenry Esq. Philadelphia 8^th June 1798. Sir To enable me to pay seven accepted Drafts in the Quarter Masters Department amounting to Six thousand five hundred and seventy nine Dollars and to pay Sunday [undecipherable] at this Post a further Sum of two thousand [undecipherable] Dollars is necessary. I therefore request an allowance for Eight thousand eight hundred and seventy nine Dollars to be charged as usual to the Quarter Master General — With Respect & Esteem I am Sir, Your most Ob^t Servt Samuel Hodgdon James M^c Henry Esq. Sir On the 18^th [undecipherable] your letter of the 6^th day by M^cAtkins the missing Notes is yet under negotiation at the Bank — but to prevent Embarrassment by delay the Secretary of War has agreed to advance to you the amount of the missing Notes subject to decision as to loss on final adjustment of your accounts — and as your Agent I have accordingly received it as well as the amount of your [undecipherable] minute sum which I have paid to [undecipherable] M^cAtkins. The balance now in my hands shall be forwarded by [undecipherable] as you request unless you sooner find an opportunity to draw for it. As the business now stands you will charge the missing notes to the Bank as a just balance the duplicate amount now placed to your debit in the Public Books. If the money is paid by the Bank as I have a right to expect it will be. I shall pay it into the hands of the Treasurer on your account and to your Credit.
