War Department 7. June 1798.
Sir,
I have had the honor, to receive your letter of the 7th March, and expect in a few days, will bring to hand, the books, and patterns for military dress, mentioned.
I cannot, without inspection, form a definite opinion, but the most [I] can with sincerity declare, I have been very much pleased, with Colonel Trumbull's remarks, and observations.
It would not be troublesome to you, to forward [strikethrough: Extremely] [undecipherable] serviceable to this Department, to receive all the regulations, which have been published, by the British Government, respecting the military, and other arrangements for the defence of the Kingdom.
It would also, be serviceable, could this Department, by the acquirement, commence a reference to, all such rules or regulations, for the government as well of the regular force, as of the militia of Great Britain, and may from time, to time, emanate from the proper authority.
Every new publication of merit, upon Artillery, Engineering, and Military subjects in general, might contribute usefully, towards maturing, the Military system of our Country.
I take the liberty of flattering myself, That you will cause such of the above publications, as can be procured, to be transmitted to the Secretary of War.
I have the honor to be,
[strikethrough: with much respect]
and esteem your most
obedient, humble Servant.
