Sir, June 1st 1798
Your Letter of the 25. of April has just reached me. I have also recieved a letter from Mr Samuel Lewis Junr with 200 Dollars for the Recruiting services. I enclose you a Muster Roll of the same date of a former one forwarded. I have mentioned in the column of remarks the situation of Sergt Jefferney, by which I hope the suspension of making him up for pay will be removed. I also inclose you my Vouchers accompanied by an Acct Current, by which it appears that after charging myself with the 200 Dollars last recieved, and paying every man his Bounty due, that I stand indebted to the U. States 15975/100 Dollars. I hope that you will find this to be a true statement. You will observe by the enclosed Acct that the first charge (to wit 48475/100 Dollars, for the Subsistence of Cap. Bruff) is not supported by a Voucher to explain this. I must inform you that the receipt roll was forwarded to the Accountants Office from Niagara by Dr Coffin last Autumn. I hope you have received it. I beg you to inform me.
Some contingent expences have unavoidably accrued I have made them with the strictest oconomy.
