Sir, Knoxville May 8^th 1793 I am under the necessity of troubling you with a small sum of money due to me for military Services. [The] money [is] in the hands of David Henley Agent of the Department of War at this place — The facts are these at the time a large sum was forwarded to Henley by [undecipherable] [undecipherable] in the year 179[undecipherable] which [undecipherable] appears by the Estimate — Upon [application] to him for payments he refuses to pay me [undecipherable] [undecipherable] performed in what is called the [undecipherable] expedition but at the Same time shewed me the Estimate upon which my names appears with the sum due to me extended against it, and admitted he had the money in his possession — I then bel[ieved] [that] the money had been forwarded from y[ou]r office [undecipherable] [undecipherable] [undecipherable] the [undecipherable] [undecipherable] of all troops engaged on that expedition, I again demanded my money from M^r Henley supposing he could have no objection to paying me, but he now denies that he has received any money for me, and that he has not only confessed to me but I have a copy of the [undecipherable] by which it appears, I mean a copy [undecipherable] to your office to [undecipherable] [undecipherable] he received the money— This object of troubling you with this letter is to request you to give orders to M^r Henley to pay me without further delay, or to take order that I may be paid by some other hand with wh[om] I may not meet so many difficulties — I have the honor to be, y[ou]r most Ob^t Serv^t [signature illegible] [Knoxville p[undecipherable] M^rs Simmons [undecipherable] Paid [undecipherable]] M^r Simmons Accountant of the War Department
