Philadelphia, 21 May, 1798. Sir, I was duly favoured with your letter bearing date the 10^th & 24 Instant. The Bank note was left out by mistake; I shall now suspend the remittance until I receive your account entire for the transportation of the Tents, which I presume I may enforce shortly — I shall wait Major Laugham's Return for the information requested in my former letter — I thank you for your communication, as far as you was acquainted with the subject — In haste, your most Obedient Servant, Samuel Hodgdon Major Henry Peabringer. Sir, You have long since been acquainted that several Post Notes of the United States Bank amounting to seven hundred and seventy Dollars twenty five Cents forwarded by me to Mr Holeson Pub^c account were lost by James failures in the Post Office — Application has been made to the Bank for their renewal and information has been given to the Treasury in every stage of the business how it progressed — the refusal of the Bank to issue other Certificates has been considered and reported on by the Comptroller who is of opinion that the Bank must make them good — In the mean time the Money is wanted to wind up the business of the Post and is accordingly drawn for in favor of Mr Pukins — The Secretary of the Treasury says the draft ought to be paid and recommends a requisition for the purpose, with this foregoing information, I submit the business to your decision — I am Sir Your Most Obedient Servant Samuel Hodgdon James McHenry Esq^r, Secretary of War,
