In answer to your request of today on the su[bject]
of the late Ensign William P. Gassaway's account I have to in[form]
you that he has an unsettled account, on the Books of this Office [&]
the appearant balance against him is two hundred & fifty five D[undecipherable]
& [undecipherable], arising from monies received by him in the Year 1792 on ac[count]
of the Recruiting service; for the expenditure, no account or v[ouchers]
have been forwarded to this Office, if his friends are in poss[ession]
of any papers or documents that will enable me to settle his ac[count]
I shall be happy to do it, & if there should appear, a balance d[ue]
to him, it can be paid to his legal representatives—

Artillery at Charleston, George town, & Georgia, have been forwarded to this
Office by the Auditor of the Treasury Department for settlement; on acc[ount]
of the different statements I find you have blended the monies you rec[eived]
from this Office with those of the Treasury — I shall therefore return
statements to you & request that you will only credit such monies as you rec[eived]
from this D[epartmen]t & its agents, & all other monies must be credited in
accounts proper to settle at the Treasury Dept.
