War Department 25^th. May 1798 Sir, I have received your letter, dated Pittsburgh 19^th May instant. It is right to accept of Lieutenant [undecipherable]'s resignation; and it will be well, to discourage as much as possible, the spirit of traffic which in some shape or other, has affected a few officers of the army, and has sometimes, exhibited effects prejudicial to the service. I have received letters from Major Hersey dated [undecipherable: Fort] Adams, Chickasaw Bluff [undecipherable] the 16^th and from Captain Shive dated same place 23^d. March 1798. Major Hersey [undecipherable: stiles] a want of clothing; particularly for Captain [undecipherable]cands company; it is expected, that this want may be supplied by clothing deposited at [undecipherable], which has been ordered down the rivi[er] [undecipherable] the supplies can be [undecipherable] from this [undecipherable]. Both letters [undecipherable] stating a great want of medical assistance; you will [undecipherable] to take measures for ordering one or two mates as may seem expedient. [undecipherable] the Contractor [undecipherable] in furnishing his supplies, to the lower posts on the Mississippi, which has compelled the Officers to make purchases, and [undecipherable] in the [undecipherable], [undecipherable] of the Nation, [undecipherable] will [undecipherable] a remedy.
