Knoxville 23 May 1798— Dear Sir Your letter of the 4 May I received and am a little surprised that you have not been told from your anxiety respecting your brothers wound. See this, he has perfectly recovered and no bad consequences followed. The ball left a handsome mark under his left eye, that has the appearance of a Dimple and is well designated toward him as a proof of bravery. I am much obliged to you for the Money advanced Norton, and hope he will be one shortly. The Indian treaty Goods have been on the Road for a long time, but teams only are arrived of those that set out in March, and the others I hear to day are a long ways off, nearly one hundred and fifty Miles. — I am now engaged in bringing M^r Gillis to a settlement, much money formally has through his hands, and he has been imprudent in every respect, tho I have paid such attention that I hope the public will not suffer from his conduct. He is out of esteem and not worthy of the least confidence; as soon as his Accounts are closed it will be for the public good as well as his own that he is ordered home of this I shall write the Secretary of War more particularly shortly.
