I received your letter of the 30^th Ult^o — On examination of the files in the Sec^y of War's Office, the account you mention to have forwarded to this Office, was found there — I presented it to M^r Hodgdon, superintendant of Military Stores, who's duty it is to pay all accounts of that nature; and requested him to act on it, he will accordingly remit the amount to you. I have not yet received the receipt of Cap^t Griffith I McKee for the Recruiting service you were directed by the Sec^y of War to refund to him — &c &c W^m Simmons Acct^t Lieut^t David Hale Portland, District of Maine Accountants Office Sir May 21^st 1798. Previous to the receipt of your letter of the 1 Inst^t the Secretary of War issued his Warrants in your favor for two hundreds & forty three dollars & forty eight Cents, payable into the hands of the supervisor of New York, being the amount of the Pay Rolls for January & February 1798. for pay of yourself & the Detachment late under your command agreeably to the enclosed letters of the 8^th February & 4 April 1798. this circumstance prevents a compliance with your request of sending the money to Boston [sideways notation: Duplicates transmitted June 6. 1798.]
