[Addressed: Mr Simmons Esq accs to the War Department Philadelphia] [Postmark: HARTFORD MAY 17] [Docket: from [undecipherable] May [undecipherable] 1798 [undecipherable]] Dear Sir The papers I want Copies of are contained in the accounts of Silas & Barnabas Deane against the United States. the accounts originated with a Committee of Congress I believe they were titled the Commercial Committee. Joseph Webb supplied, he says, several Vessels on Charters some of which were taken and that he never recd any thing for them or their Charter. and that on the Settlement which I made with Col Walker there was an allowance for them to Mr Deane. all I know of the matter is there was an allowance to Ashbell & Joseph Webb for the Charters price for one Vessel about 500 B which they impowered Deane to receipt. Webb is now in prison and wishes much to have those accounts examined. I pray you to send me Copies of those accounts so far as Webbs name is found and particularly the Copies of all her Vouchers for every thing in those accounts. I can not find how Deane amounts could be credited for Supplies — by Joseph Webb without Webb had given receipts for payment. or given powers of attorney to receive the payment — I have looked at the little Mare she is the prettiest little thing I ever saw of this breed she is thin but not in good nurture when in order shall be [undecipherable] brothe and — [undecipherable] on.
