Hooker, Successor to M^r Byers Sir, War Department, April 14^th 1798 The President of the United States having appointed you to Succeed M^r James Byers, the present Factor to the Indian Store at Tellico in the State of Tennesee, you will be pleased to repair thither with all convenient haste, and take upon yourself the management and conducting of the said factory. The annexed papers and letters lay down and explain your functions and duties viz: To M^r James Byers, dated the 26^th November 1796, the 17^th of March, 14^th of June, 4^th of Novem^r & 26^th of December 1796. and 2^d & of Feb^ry 1798. You will carefully deliberate upon the the instructions contained in those papers, and implicitly govern yourself by them and such further orders as you may receive. On your arrival at Tellico, you will notify your appointment to M^r Byers, who will be requested to remain some time in the store, and give you such information respecting the business and mode of carrying on with the Indians as may serve to obviate the inconveniences which might be experienced by his immediately resigning into your hands. You will receive from M^r Byers all the Books, papers, goods and effects belonging to the factory. The inventory of the effects must be taken in your presence, the several articles weighed or measured, and the Inventory sworn to by both, and a duplicate thereof, with the latte, transmitted to the Secretary for the department of War. Your Salary will be at the rate of one thousand dollars per annum. You and your assistants will be dieted at the publick Expense, but you will keep an exact account of whatever is purchased, and observe the strictest economy, and will state the annual expense for the same, in the annual inventory required to be returned to the department of War, agreeable to the annexed letter dated Decem^r 26^th 1796.
