Philadelphia 11 April 1793.
Sir,
Having at the request of the post master General, waited untill this time under an apprehension that a letter forwarded by post on the 4th March, 1791, to the address of Thomas Willing at his house in Virginia, and which contained post notes of your Bank belonging to the United States to the amount of Seven Hundred and twenty Dollars and twenty five Cents, which has now since been missing, might and very probably would return to his Office about this time with the dead letters; but finding that those Items have generally returned, and have been examined, without making any discovery of the letter in question — I deem it now my duty to apply to the Bank for payment of the amount of the Notes — every necessary caution has been used during the time I have been writing on the Post Office to prevent the notes from getting into circulation — Should they have gotten into unknown hands, of which if necessary I can and will produce the evidence — Request Sir that you will lay this letter before the Directors, and inform me what will be the result.
I am, Sir,
Thomas Willing, Esqr
President of the Bank
United States. —
your most obedient Servant.
Samuel Hodgdon.
