Philadelphia 5^th April 1798. Sir, The enclosed Estimate is just received from Major Langham. He informs me in his letter that a considerable part of the money is advanced by him, and having requested the money to be paid to me, he has drawn on me in favor of Mess^rs Baker & Compy for the Amount — I am Sir Your most Obedient Servant Samuel Hodgdon [James McHenry Esq^r Secretary of War.] Philadelphia 6^th April 1798. Sir, It may seem officious to mention again Mess^rs Nicklins and Griffiths request to be furnished with one of our [strikethrough: out] [underline: six] six pounder Iron Guns, in lieu of their two three Pounders, which I borrowed of them for the use of the Revenue Cutter and which are now on board here. That Agency having been performed under the direction of the Secretary of the Treasury I felt an obligation to assist in the completion of the mutual accommodation. Will thank you for information whether the exchange as above stated can be effected, they have purchased two Guns, one only is now wanted.
