Secretary of War April 1^st 1793 [a Copy of] Inclosed you have a correspondence between Col. Hawkins M^r Brenham the present contractor & myself which may Inform you of the subject on which we wish your decision and what Col H. I will only observe that if M^r Brenham is permitted to keep a store on the Indian territory it will very materially interfere with the public establishment here by creating variation of prices dissatisfaction with the Indians and divide the profit of the trade which [won't] well afford it — Our business here is of such a various and extensive nature as to require almost all my attention in conducting and superintending the different parts and classes of the body. I have no person suitable of taking charge of the accounts but myself and owing to the want of accomodation and [produce?] and so many interruptions the business has accumulated upon me and got behind that I shall not be able to bring it up without the assistance of an active young man educated for and capable of taking charge of a set of books for 250 or 300 dollars and I am confident the public would be a gainer by allowing to the factory such a person the matter you made the [undecipherable] The head of our Indian plan is [undecipherable] as they ought to have his eyes every where to not [undecipherable] he should be removed from the general business or keeping the [last] interest again — [signature]
