Captⁿ Burrows Smith near Quanton New Market, New Jersey Accountants Office March 31. 1798 Sir I received on the 28 Inst. your affidavit taken before David Bishop, declaring that you have paid all the monies placed into your hands for the pay of a Company of militia commanded by you in the Year 1794 which will be filed with the Pay roll conformably to my letter of the 28 Novem^r 1797— I am &^c W Simmons Acct^t M^r Hugh Caperton late a Captⁿ in Service U.S. Green Brier C^o Virginia Accountants Office March 31. 1798 Sir I wrote you last under date the 17^th January 97 informing you that you stood charged with money on the Books of this Office and requesting you to forward vouchers for the expenditure of the same; as I could not ascertain with precision your address; I am fearful the letter never got to your hands. John Steele Esq^r of Richmond has offered to convey a letter to you. I therefore avail myself of the opportunity to renew my request that you will immediately account for the money received by you of Captⁿ Thomas Lewis in May 1792, for the Recruiting service either by producing suitable vouchers; or by refunding the amount to the Treasurer of the United States. this is a measure the more necessary from the length of time that has elapsed since you received the money Jan^y 1^st W Simmons Acct^t
