The Buidleing of the Gallies has occasioned a very great increase of expenditure at this post. I am apprehensive I shall find it necessary to draw on you Weekly provided I can find cash sufficient at this place. This day I have made two drafts on you, Viz: one in favor of John Neville for a thousand and the other in favor of William McKinley for four hundred dollars, both at eight days sight, which be pleased to pay & charge as usual. The Quarter Master General says the advances made to the Ship Carpenters ought to have been charged to his account as he had previously received an account of those advances from Joshua Humphries and had on the arrival of these Men make further advances and has found it necessary to raise an account with each of them — I presume he will write you on that subject. In order to determine, whether I have not been imposed upon by a person in whom I reposed a confidence I have to beg of you to obtain of the Comptroller and transmit to me is soon as possible the [underline: Original] of one of my Vouchers of Expenditures forwarded, together with my other accounts, on the 15^th of September 1797 and Numbered 3284. it being an account for services of Artificers taken from the line and employed in erecting the buildings at du Barp; and you may assure the Comptroller or the person of whom you may obtain the Voucher that it shall be pointedly returned as soon as the business is investigated for which it is requested. The demand for Stationary has been so great that I have not now on hand one Company, nor orderly Book, nor one stick of sealing Wax, nor any red Ink powder.
