Amount of Cash received and expended in the Quarter Masters Department from the 8^th September 1792. to the 1^st January 1798. Dollars 1,102,028.42. Average expenditure per Annum — 200,629.95. Philad^a 10^th April 1798 Sir, Agreeably to your request I have made and herewith send you a Statement of the Money which has passed through my hands on Account for the Quarter Master Department from the time of my appointment up to the first day of the present year — The division shews the annual expenditure during the time — The present situation of the Money should we be favoured with peace will considerably abridge the transportation expenditures but it should be recollected that Naval appointments on the Lakes which are chargeable to the Quarter Masters Department will for this year [strikethrough: swell] the amount very considerably [strikethrough: from] the present view of the business I am led to conclude that the expenditure in the present year will be equal to the above average or nearly — I am Sir your most obedient Servant Samuel Hodgdon.
