Brandy, Spikes, Howitzers, Anchors, Etc.
Document 1798In Gibbs' return book is entered three casks of brandy, 434 gallons of which is correct. There is an error, however, due probably to the faintness of the lines in the ledger. The spikes are entered in return book 5674 but there is an inaccuracy which should be corrected by one of the clerks. The howitzers are also entered in this return. He has receipted the Naval Agent for the three anchors.

[Letter from Caleb Gibbs. Boston dated 6th March 1798]

Boston March 6th 1798
Sir
I have been favd with yours of the 13 Inst. In answer to which I will beg leave to observe — That in my Return Book is Entered St [undecipherable] Brandy 432 gallons which is wright. but in Copying the Return in the column of Casks is blotted with the two first figures of gallons owing I suppose to the faintness of the lines — The receipt for the [undecipherable] is forwarded —
The Spikes are Entered in the Return Book 5674. [undecipherable] also the duplicate receipt this is clearly an Inaccuracy in Copying. will you be obliging enough to let one of your Clerks correct this likewise with the Brandy. A receipt is forwarded to Correspond with the Spikes. The Howitzers are entered in this Return, in which you will please to observe in the columns of Number & weight of Anchors are both blanks. I receipted to the Naval Agent for three Anchors specifying their weight & entred them accordingly but on examination Capt Nickilson did not like some of them and a Suspicion arose [undecipherable] account of their weight not being so much as they were rated. It proved so & the matter remains uncertain which Capt Nickilson will take by next return they will be [undecipherable]. I inclose you have the Return for the Navy [undecipherable] in this place for the Month of Feby 1798. which I hope will meet your approbation —
[addressed to:] James Hodgson Esqr.
