I have received your letter of the 2d respecting your claim for land as a deranged Officer, and have at the War Office where the names of Officers entitled to land the United States are returned, your name does not appear on it. If you was deranged as a major you would be entitle to 400 a and in order to ascertain this point I have had recourse to the Rolls, where you appear to be omitted in January 1778 without reason being offered I have also referred to your settlements which made with the State of North Carolina where it appears they ha with you for pay & subsistance 8th up to 31 August 1779 it would t appear that you could not have been considered as a deranged O entitled to Land from the United States

Your letter of the 17th Instt has been rece enclosing sundry receipts for bounties paid by you & payrolls for D January last the answer was delayed on account of the want of app having passed in Congress for 98 I expect they will pass in a few d the amount of the latter will be remitted to you
