Sir
Since writing my letter that accompanies this the Secretary of War has put into my hand a letter received from General Wilkinson on the subject of procuring a quantity of Shot & Shells in the vicinity of Pittsburgh. We have usually sent such Stores as make weights and therefore the transportation has been considered as costing very little. Besides however in consequence of the Generals letter make an estimate of the probable quantity that may be wanted and which can be better supplied with you then from hence, for this purpose I wish you to inform me whether Shot and Shells of all sizes, and in any necessary quantities can be furnished in your neighbourhood, and at what rates. When I receive this information you shall hear further from me on the subject.
