To M^r James Byers jun^r War Department, Feb^y 23. 1798 Sir, I have received your letter of the 14^th of January Ult^o, and one some time before, informing me of your intention to retire as may from the trust you hold, and requesting that a Successor may be appointed to relieve you. I assure you I am very sorry to lose your services, and could wish that it had been convenient and suitable to your interest to have continued. I do not flatter myself that the public will find one to replace you more faithful and attentive; although I hope the Gentleman you have recommended, and who will succeed to your appointment, will deserve the character you have given of him. I shall endeavor to arrange things so that he may be with you in all March, or some time in may. He will receive from you the Books, food, and public effects and give you a receipt for the same. The Inventory of the effects must be taken in his presence and sworn to by both — In the mean time, you may make such arrangements, and bring up your books and accounts to a period, that will facilitate the transfer on his arrival.
