Sir Philadelphia Feb^y 22^d 1798. I inclose to you sundry extracts from letters and instructions given to the late general Wayne (copies of which have been submitted to the consideration of the Comptroller) — by these letters, & extracts it would appear that the powers vested in him were adequate to the controul of the public monies entrusted to me at Head quarters; and by which I flatter myself you will be enabled to give me a credit for the amount of all the sums drawn from me, either for the pay of the army, or for the purchase of Supplies and transportation. A settlement of my public accounts at your office has ever been an object of the highest consideration with me, and it is with regret I learn by your letter of the 8^th instant, that your time and attention is now so occupied in business of Superior importance as not to ad mit of your entering immediately into the examination of the Vouchers which remain yet to be passed to my Credit. If however the extracts now laid before you, and the opinion of the Comptroller which will also be laid before you, should enable you to give me a credit for such payments and vouchers as have heretofore been deemed objectionable; the business can go on I should presume in my absence: and I wish you would please to inform me whether a short absence from this town will under the present circumstances of my accounts be productive of any inconvenience.
