[Capt. S. Nicholson]
In your letter of the 25 of December last you expressed a wish to have 100 Tons of Kentledge for your Ship in addition to the Tons already provided.
Captain Barry has taken on Board the United States 100 Tons only, and Captain Nicholson on board the Constellation 75 Tons which they consider Sufficient for their respective Ships, and Should a larger quantity be put on board than is absolutely necessary the Safety of the Ship in her Movements may be endangered by rolling or making her otherwise uneasy.
Therefore expect that what is already provided for your Ships will be found adequate to the Service, but Should you find undisputable Strength but not enough be made use of in addition to the Kentledge I have written to Mr Francis respecting your purchase &c Whether myself he will look such [undecipherable] are once from [undecipherable]
