[18 Feby 1798 Cap.^t T. Lewis] Fort-Chapin 19 February 1798 Sir I have taken the liberty of enclosing a Letter to M^r Litgreaves, it contains the deposition of Mead Mitchell, I have left them open in order that you may peruse them after which I will thank you to put a Seal in, and be pleased to have the Letter forwarded. I find by this Mitchell, that he is concerned with Foo & his party, that finding it impracticable to pass the Military Posts upon the Tenesee, they have altered their route, & mounted thro' Kentucky, in part, where they are assembling at the falls of the Ohio, from whence they intend to embark for the Mouths of Cumberland River, where a Town was to be laid out for their temporary accomodation; Mitchell is to be, as he says, the principal Surveyors & that his business at this place was to know from Captain Pike, where the Indian line, particularly ran, that he wished to know as they intended to move as near it as possible; however I am well assured that all this enquiry of M^r Mitchell, is nothing more, than finesse; I think his real object was to discover what number of Troops the Garrison consisted of, & to know the disposition of this detatchment — his Kentucky Corps of Artillery consists as I am informed, of Small pieces which he has pack'd on Horse back to Kentucky & will embark them at the Falls. — While I labour under much pain from the accident I met with on the day I left Philadelphia, in addition to it, I have been regularly attack'd by the Ague & Fever, how long it may continue, is hard to tell; I fear it will not be [strikethrough: shortly] remove'd & on this account I beg leave to observe that the sooner I am able to get out of this county the sooner I shall be able to have my health restored.
