[James McHenry, Sec^o of War War Office 15 Feby 1798] [GAr.] Indian Affairs 1798 --- War Office 15 February 1798. Sir, I have received by todays mail your Excellency's letter of the 24^th of January. The prompt step which you have taken to discover and bring to punishment the person or persons who shot the Indian Commissioner and wounded two other Greeks in their Camp on Little River, cannot fail of being satisfactory to the President, while the cause for it has excited serious apprehensions and leaves it extremely uncertain whether it will be possible to prevent retaliation. Every measure has been adopted that appeared calculated to soothe and pacify the Indians and induce them to wait the operation of the laws. The money appropriated for the pay of the Georgia Militia for past services has been directed to be lodged in the Branch Bank at Charleston subject to the orders of Major Freeman who has been advised thereof and instructed to proceed to pay it as soon as possible after his arrival in Georgia where he may be daily expected. It is out of my power to give you any satisfactory information touching the probability of what Congress may do respecting a further appropriation for the Militia.
