Knoxville Feb^ry 4^th 1798 Your letter of the 22^nd of Dec^r informs me that I shall soon be acquainted with the Mode of transacting my Business in future as Pay Master to the 1^st Regiment and that I shall have an officer with whom I am to communicate. Having received no Information on the Subject, and being ordered by Col. Butler to make out Pay Rolls for four Months to include the Month of July last and Subsistance for the Year 1797 proceeded to do the Business in the usual Form. Upon offering Rolls for M^r Wight's Inspection that I might receive the Amount Colonel Henly the Agent of War he informed me that he could not receive them without my lodging Triplicates of both Pay and Muster Rolls in his Office and altho' I shewed him your Acknowledgement of the Receipt of the Rolls he could not proceed to the Examination without them. — This renders the Business very troublesome being obliged to retain one Set of each myself which makes it necessary to furnish Quadruplicates. The Regiment is now Ten Months in arrear of Pay which has induced me to comply with his Requisition having had Duplicate Copies made of those Muster Rolls now in my Possession. Colonel Henly informs me that he will be enabled soon to furnish Cash for the whole of the Year 1797. I shall therefore esteem it a particular Favour if you will furnish me with your full Instructions upon the Subject.
