William Simmons Esqr.
Philadela 13 Feby 1798
Sir
Enclosed is a list of the Absentes of the Garrison of Massac & known as rendered or accounted for by me at my Settlement. The men of Capt Pasteur's Compy were absent on command & was the reason of their not being paid, but knowing that they could or would not perhaps have an Oppy again of receiving their pay I empowered Mr R. Buntin Apt QMr. at that post to pay them, & left receipts with him for the purpose, to the Amt of 105[undecipherable]/100 Dollars — And in the month of December, I am nearly certain they were paid —
Robt Martin of Capt Pikes Compy is paid & remark'd in my Memorandum book & the receipt lost — his pay [undecipherable] fee is 14[undecipherable]/100 Dollars — the whole Amt 119[undecipherable]/100 Dollars —
I wish for this sum to be advanced to me for the purpose mentioned & let me Stand Charged untill I forward the Vouchers to credit my Act. — As I have every reason to beleive that those men (agreeably to this Statement) are paid previous to this by me — I hope my request will be granted. —
I have the honor to
be yr mo. obt.
Hum Servt
